Nea Chora & Agia Marina West of Chania – Best for easy beach access

The area west of Chania is ideal for those wanting to discover the most beautiful highlights in north-western and southern Crete. The infrastructure here is excellent, the small, charming village centre features shops and many restaurants.

Nea Chora is located just west of the old town of Chania and gives easy otld town access. Agia Marina located just a little bit further and is one of the best areas of Crete and my personal favourite holiday destination on the island. I liked the beaches here as you can perfectly watch the sunrise and sunset from here and get to Chania quickly.

• Pros of staying in Agia Marina: Perfect base for visiting the sights in the west, great beaches close by & more quiet, yet Chania old town is still within easy reach

• Cons of staying in Agia Marina: Accommodation is more expensive than in other areas & you have to get into your car to reach the old town

Casa Nostos offers stylish rooms in great setting located a few metres away from the beach yet comparably affordable, especially off season. A beautiful, and exceptionally clean accommodation close to everything, yet offering perfect privacy. The small family run hotel is located very close to the sea (sandy beach) within easy access of restaurants and supermarkets. Koum Kapi – Best for seaside & local vibes

The neighborhood of Koum Kapi neighborhood lies directly east of the Venetian Harbor and the Old Town. The beating heart of the neighborhood is the café-lined waterfront street that wraps around the bay between the Sabbionara Bastion and Koum Kapi Beach.

While still within easy walking distance of the historic center, Koum Kapi has a distinctly more local and relaxed vibe. You’ll spot Cretans playing backgammon and sipping Fredo Espresso all day round here.

The rooms at Alcanea Hotel are just a stone’s throw from the harbour and offer magnificent views. Café Society is right on the doorstep, hip couples and overseas travelers love it, and there’s also a trendy bar and a rich local breakfast menu. Alcanea was once the headquarters of Crete’s most important politician. His offices have been converted into a quiet and colourful little hotel with a focus on elegance and style. You enter via its own café-bar at street level, which opens onto a car-free street. For an atmospheric dinner, head to Tramonto (Google Maps), a seaside restaurant serving modern Mediterranean food in a beautiful setting. I had the salty waffle (chicken and waffles) which was perfect but a huge portion.
