Elafonisi in Crete is probably the most beautiful beach on the entire island. The beach enchants with its characteristic pink sand, which is created by large quantities of shells. These are finely ground by the sea current and deposited on the beach.

Elafonisi Beach seemed like a South Sea lagoon to me, with pink shimmering sand and crystal clear turquoise water.

Elafonisi Beach – The most beautiful beach in Crete?

Is the beach it worth the long journey to the south-western tip of Crete? In this blog article, I will give you all information you need to make your trip to Elafonisi perfect and some tips on how to visit this gem.

Among the numerous dream beaches on Crete, the Elafonisi lagoon is undoubtedly one of the most popular. Not only does it offer an extraordinary panorama, but it also provides ideal bathing conditions for even the youngest guests. Protected from wind and waves by an offshore peninsula, the water here is calm and barely more than a metre deep. The narrow sandbanks that stretch out into the water offer wonderful opportunities for short walks.

What is so special about Elafonisi Beach?

• Pink sand: Elafonisi is known for its pink and white sand, which is created by crushed shells. The play of colours is particularly striking at sunrise and sunset.
• Crystal clear water: I found the water at Elafonisi incredibly having a breathtaking turquoise colour – perfect for swimming and snorkelling.
• Natural beauty: The beach is located in a nature reserve and is home to a variety of rare plants and species, such as the loggerhead sea turtle. It is surrounded by rocky hills, which creates a beautiful and peaceful atmosphere.

What to expect at Elafonisi Beach

Is it worth visiting Elafonisi Beach?

Yes, Elafonisi is worth visiting, but it depends on when you go and what you expect. The beach is known for its pink sand and turquoise water, but it can be very crowded during high season (June to August). To avoid the crowds, you should plan to arrive early in the morning (before 10am) or visit during low season.

Why is it worth it?

• Beautiful nature: The beach and the offshore island offer a unique landscape with pink sand created by broken shells. The water is shallow and clear creating a dreamy atmosphere.
• Protected Nature reserve: The site is part of a nature reserve where you can go for walks and explore the unique flora and fauna of the region.
• No cruise ships: The beach is no longer be a stop for cruise ships, which contributes to a quieter atmosphere during your visit.

Amenities at the Beach

There are four different sections at the beach. The busy middle part, the slightly calmer left and right sides and then the highlight, Elafonisi Island.

• Sunbeds: You can rent sunbeds under cute straw parasols for around €15 a day during the high season. The best spot for me is the area on the right (when looking out on the water) side of the beach the best. It felt a little calmer than the middle part.
• Food & Drinks: When I visited there were two snack bars in the middle part of the beach, serving cold drinks, some Cretan dishes, snacks, ice creamand cold drinks. Further up the road away from the beach, you’ll find another Restaurant.
• Toilets: There are basic facilities such as a few restrooms and changing areas. I did not use the restrooms though as they looked kind of dirty.

What to Bring

I recommend good walking-trail shoes and some beach slippers. They’ll make your walk down to the beach more comfortable and guarantee an enjoyable time at the beach itself. Compared to other beaches on Crete, Elafonisi is very easy to reach with the beach located just 600m from the parking. The walk there is easy and not steep.

Also, don’t forget to pack plenty of water, a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to shield yourself from the sun. After all, staying hydrated and protected is crucial as there is almost no shade.

There is a supermarket right next to the parking if you forgot anything and want to stock up just there.

Guide to Visiting Elafonisi Beach

You can reach the Elafonisi Lagoon by car, public bus or boat from Paleochora. Alternatively, you can take a guided tour to Elafonisi. This beautiful beach is located in a secluded spot in the far south-west of the island of Crete.

The nearest larger town, Paleochora, is about 35 km or an hour’s drive away. From Chania, you can reach the beach in about 1.5 hours. The capital, Heraklion, is 210 km or about 3.5 hours away.

Driving to Elafonisi Beach

Of course, the most flexible option is to travel in your own car or a rental car. This allows you stay flexible and add stops like you prefer. Parking is available free of charge. However, especially in the high season, it is advisable to arrive in the morning to secure a parking space at the lagoon.

Getting To The Beach

Already the journey to the lagoon is an experience: the road from Chania or Kissamos to Elafonisi is narrow and winding, but the beauty of the landscape is breathtaking. Among other things, you will pass through the imposing Topolia Gorge.

About five kilometres north of Elafonisi is the Chrysoskalitisa Monastery, built on a high rock. According to legend, the last step of the staircase leading to the monastery shines in a golden colour. However, this spectacle is only visible to those who dare to climb the stairs at sunrise or sunset when the light conditions are right.

Elafonisi Parking: In the small village above Elafonisi Lagoon, I found a new parking, where you can park your vehicle for a fee (approx. €3). From here, it’s about a 10-minute walk down to Elafonisi Beach (approx. 600 metres).

Getting there By Bus

From Chania, a public bus service is operated by KTEL Chania running daily at 9:00 am during the season (from May to October) and takes about two hours. The return journey from Elafonisi to Chania is at 4:00 pm. A ticket costs €10.

Tours to Elafonisi include the bus transfer as well as an English-speaking guide and pick-up from your hotel (depending on the location). Meals are not included, but there are places to stop for refreshments along the way.

Boat trips to Elafonisi

Alternatively, you can also take a boat trip to this dream beach. The most convenient oprion is to start your trip from the coastal town of Paleochora.

In summer (high season), a ferry departs from the port of Paleochora at 10:00 a.m. and takes one hour to reach Elafonisi. The return trip is at 4:00 p.m. A one-way ticket costs €10 per person.

Where to Stay close to Elafonisi?

If you are planning a trip to the famous Elafonissi Beach, I recommend choosing accommodation on the west coast of Crete. The towns of Peleochora or Kissamos are good options, for example, and you will find a good selection on booking.com. However, the lagoon can also be easily reached from Chania, which is about 1.5 hours away.

Things to do at Elafonissi Beach

Discover the Lagoon

Elafonisi Beach is known for its distinctive pink sand, crystal clear waters and unspoilt nature. The shallow lagoon that separates Elafonisi Island from the mainland is one of the highlights of the area.

Swimming and sunbathing

The warm waters that are perfect for swimming. Relax on the famous pink sand and soak up the Mediterranean sun. I recommend bringing a comfortable beach towel and renting a sun lounger for extra comfort. Families will especially appreciate the calm and safe environment for children.

Water Sports

For water sports enthusiasts, Elafonisi Beach offers a variety of water sports suitable for both beginners and experienced adventurers.

• Kayaking & Paddleboarding: Glide across the calm waters of the lagoon or venture further along the coast to enjoy breathtaking views of the coast and hidden coves. You can rent kayaks and stand-up paddleboards (SUP). Guided tours are offered as well by local providers.
• Snorkelling: Discover the vibrant underwater world of Elafonisi Beach. Shallow reefs and rock formations provide an ideal habitat for small fish and colourful sea creatures. The clear visibility makes it ideal for underwater adventures.
• Windsurfing & Kitesurfing: Both Elafonisi and Falasarna are epic windsurf spots. Equipoment for rent is available from Elafonisi Extreme Sports.

Take Photos

Photography enthusiasts will find Elafonisi a dream destination. The unique blend of pink sand, turquoise water and vibrant flora offers countless opportunities for stunning shots. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times for photography, as the light at these times of day highlights the natural colours of the landscape.

I recommend heading to elevated spots such as sand dunes or rocky outcrops to take wide-angle shots of the lagoon and surrounding coastline.

Hiking

Elafonisi is surrounded by a breathtaking natural landscape that attracts hikers and nature lovers alike. Follow a the path that leads to Kedrodasos Beach, another hidden gem of Crete, known for its cedar forests and pristine waters.

The hike offers unique views of the coastline and the opportunity to discover rare plants.

Elafonisi Beach – Discovering the surroundings

If you want to visit Elafonisi beach, you will definitely need a rental car. From the towns of Kissamos or Chania in western Crete, you can reach the lagoon via a winding road that also leads over mountains. This meant that I was even lucky enough to escape the bad weather that prevailed on the other side of the valley during my visit. The clouds simply hung over the peaks and dissipated. The journey from Kissamos took me about an hour.

Once you’re in the region, you might want to consider visiting the small town of Palaiochora on the south-west coast of the island. It’s a few extra kilometres, but this coastal village, framed by wild green peaks and the sea, is absolutely worth a detour. The old Venetian fort above the village offers the best views, and restaurants here serve the freshest seafood you can get. Once you’ve had your fill, it might be a little easier to digest the dark history surrounding Crete’s dreamlike Elafonisi lagoon.
