The best area to stay in Agios Nikolaos is the lively town centre around the marina. This area offers easy access to the central beachesthe charming harbour, the deep lake, and a wide array of cafes and restaurants.
The town centre and marina are the best choice for everyone wishing to stay close to all mod cons with a variety of restaurants in close proximity. The area also offers easy access to Ammoudi Beach and Ammos Beach. Beautiful scenery, charming streets, and a lively yet relaxed atmosphere await you.
Niko Seaside Resort, rated one of the best hotels in Agios Nikolaos, is located within easy walking distance to the charming city centre if you are looking for a stylish place with good service right next to the water. A great choice for visitors in featuring a rooftop pool in a central location close to all the restaurants and nightlife.

Staying north of Agios Nikolaos offers a more quiet, scenic experience, primarily centered around the village of Elounda (10–15 mins drive) and the quaint, traditional fishing village of Plaka (further north). This area features calm beaches, boutique suites, and numerous tavernas overlooking Spinalonga Island.

Staying south of Almyros Beach (2.5 km from Agios Nikolaos) offers a prime location for combining tranquil beach relaxation with relative proximity to town. Key options include luxurious beachfront villas and boutique resorts like The Island Concept, featuring shallow, clear waters and easy access to amenities.
Why a good choice? – Amazing views from the heated pool. I tried a massage in the spa as well and can totally recommend that. Beautiful, modern design and a very peaceful atmosphere.
The newly built (3 years ago) Lazar Lux Suites offer spacious apartments and swimming pool in a more calm local setting, ideally situated to visit Agios Nikolaos (10 minutes drive) and Eastern Crete.
Ammoudara Beach is just a 2-minute walk away. Most apartments have balconies. Try getting a room on the upper floors for beautiful views over the bay.
For first-timers, I recommend staying in the town centre near Lake Voulismeni. This is the best place to stay for a first visit to enjoy local culture and cuisine. If you prefer to stay at a resort with private beach access, the areas along Elounda Road to the north or Almyros to the south are great choices.
Agios Nikolaos offers a plethora of experiences that cater to all ages, from sun-soaked beaches to historical sites and activities, making it a great destination for families looking to explore and enjoy together.
May, June, September, and October are the best months to visit Agios Nikolaos for pleasant weather, fewer crowds and reasonable prices. If you prefer a more lively summer atmosphere, July and August are great, but as is the case almost everywhere, you can expect hot weather, more tourists, and higher prices for accommodation.
At least three days is enough to get a good feel for the town, but you can also spend a whole week hopping from beach to beach if you want.
