Rethymno is one of the most diverse and vibrant cities in Crete. For many centuries, the city has been a true melting pot of cultures: Venetians, Ottomans and Greeks have all left their traces on its architecture, streetscape and way of life. This history is still visible to this day – and makes Rethymnon a city that you don’t just visit, but have to experience.

I’ve visited Rethymno several times and stayed in various parts of town during my trips. My favourite hotel is Poseidon Hotel due to its location close to the old town and the amazing waterfront views. Rethymno is located roughly in the middle of the western part of the island, making visiting other areas easier while driving less. From Rethymno, it’s easy to reach Chania and the western beaches, while Lasithi doesn’t seem so remote either. Compared to Chania, Rethymno offers slightly better value for money.

In this guide, I’ll offer you a rundown of the three recommended accommodation areas in Rethymno and provide the best hotels & resorts to help you plan the trip of a lifetime. Rethymno’s hotel culture has grown out of many existing buildings, so you will find many very beautiful small boutique hotels surrounded by old walls.

• When to Visit Rethymno: I recommend visiting during the shoulder season (April – May, September – October) for more favorable room rates and less crowds.

Rethymno – Neighbourhoods and Areas Overview

Rethymno is very compact and walkable, but accommodation choices still matter more than many travellers expect. Staying just a few streets apart can change your sleep quality, daily routine, beach access, and even how much you enjoy your holiday on Crete at all.

Rethymno can be divided into three distinct areas, plus a few nearby villages outside town.

• Old Town: The historic centre with narrow streets, Venetian architecture, and lots of atmosphere.
• Rethymno Beach: A long sandy beach stretching east from the Old Town.
• New Town: The more residential area between Old Town and the beach. Less busy and more local.

The best areas to stay in Rethymno are the Old Town, Beachfront and NewTown neighbourhoods. Those traveling by car and wishing to stay beyond the bustle of the historic centre will find excellent seafront accommodations in Adelianos Kampos, 10km or 20 minutes by car to the east of Rethymno.

Old Town – The Best area in Rethymno for Culture & Nightlife

Attractions & Things to do in the Old Town:

• Fortezza Fortress: Visit this large Venetian fortress offering an impressive view of the old town, the harbour and the coast – a must-see on any visit.
• Venetian Harbour: I recommend visiting this atmospheric place in the evening, with its many fish taverns and the old lighthouse.
• Rimondi Fountain: A central meeting place dating from 1626, adorned with three lion heads. Ideal for culture lovers.
• Stroll through the narrow alleys: Discover the picturesque, narrow streets of the old town with their numerous souvenir shops, boutiques and cafés.
• Neratze Mosque: A former Venetian church converted into a mosque by the Ottomans and now often used for musical events.

1. Neratze Hammam Suites

Behind a listed façade dating from the 16th century lies a place brimming with historic charm and modern aesthetics. The interior of this medieval building has been lovingly restored from the cellar to the roof.

Experience a beautiful, unique property in a historic building, very close to the shops and restaurants. The small rooms are beautifully designed, combining charm and comfort in the heart of the old town. Marilou at reception made my stay here just perfect. A good choice for: culture lovers, couples on a romantic holiday.

2. Rimondi Boutique Hotel

Rimondi Boutique Hotel is one of the stablished small hotels in town with a beautiful inner courtyard and pool, located in a less busy part of the old town close to the Fortezza.

• Situated in the heart of Rethymno’s picturesque old town, yet very quiet
• The Palazzo Collection building dates back to the period of Venetian occupation
• Historical sights and a beautiful sandy beach are just a 5-minute walk away
• A family-run hotel with just only 33 rooms and suites, and attentive, friendly staff

A peaceful hidden gem in Rethymno where I particularly enjoyed the delicious healthy beakfast. Best for: historic charme in a quiet part at the edge of the old town of Rethymno.

3. La Montre Luxury Boutique Suites

La Montre is a more modern option for your stay with some nice historic touches in their stunning rooms, located right in the Old Town. Since this is more my personal taste, I liked staying there very much. The hotel has a very cosy feeling to it and staff made me feel welcome and looked after anytime.

Waterfront – Best for easy Beach Access

Rethymno’s waterfront area is the 13km stretch extending east from town, very popular, well-organized with sunbeds, and lined with resorts, restaurants, and cafes. The area can feel busy and more touristy but gives you direct access to the sea.

Tip: Stay a bit closer to to the old town along the beach.

Poseidon Hotel – My Recommendation on Rethymno Beach

Poseidon Hotel is located right on the beach but still in relative close proximity to the old town with lovely views of the sea from all rooms that also feature a balcony each. The restaurant also has a great atmosphere. I particularly enjoyed the breakfast there every day.

Adelianos Kampos – Best for a more tranquil stay outside town

Adelianos Kampos is one of my favorite little villages in Crete to stay in. It’s fairly close to Rethymno, but far enough to stay away from the hassle of the city center. The beach features small pebbles mixed with sand, the sea is clean. The village has a tiny center along the main road with shops, restaurants, and some really authentic tavernas. The town has a very laid-back atmosphere.

• Pros of staying in Adelianos Kampos: Perfect tranquil base for visiting the sights in the west, great beaches close by with better value for money, yet Rethymno old town is still within easy reach by car.

• Cons of staying in Adelianos Kampos: You have to get into your car to reach the old town

Nalu Resort and Spa

Everything was absolutely perfect here. The hotel is new, the spacious rooms are beautifully designed with great attention to details. The resort was very clean, and had a very welcoming feel to it. Staff were exceptionally friendly and I enjoyed the peaceful vibe by the sea.

• Spilies Beach: A small, quieter pebble beach with caves, a lovely hidden gem.
• Episkopi Beach: A spacious, laid-back sandy beach west of Rethymno.
• Bali Beaches: The village of Bali offers several sheltered, picturesque bays with sandy stretches.

Is it better to stay in Rethymnon or Chania?

Chania seems to be the obvious choice. It has an international airport, offers quick access to the main attractions in western Crete such as Balos, Elafonisi and the Samaria Gorge, and even allows for day trips to Rethymno. Rethymnon’s old town is bigger than old town Chania and can feel more commercial. Rethymno however offers easy access to some nearby mountain villages and is easier and faster to reach from Heraklion.
