I’ve visited Heraklion several times and stayed in various parts of town during my trips. Heraklion is very compact and fairly walkable, but accommodation choices still matter more than many travellers expect. Staying just a few streets apart can change how much you enjoy the start to your holiday adventure on Crete. I recommend booking early as prices go up closer to the date, especially if you are planning to visit during peak season in July or August.

For me, the best areas to stay in Heraklion is the Old Town. Blending Venetian and Greek influences I really love the atmosphere there being close to everything I need.

Attractions & Things to do in the Old Town:

Built in 1925 and now behind a listed façade lies the GDM Megaron Hotel brimming with historic charm and modern aesthetics. Overlooking the old Venetian port and within walking distance of all the major sights of the city, this hotel is where I stay when I arrive in Crete.

• Location: Just south of the port of Heraklion
• Distance to the airport: approx. 5 km from Heraklion Airport, about a 10-minute drive
• Nearest beach: approx. 3 km from the nearest beaches

The service is excellent, the rooms are modern, and the hotel restaurant’s roof terrace offers magnificent views over the city. I particularly like the vibe in the spacious public areas during the day.

Artion City Boutique Hotel

Artion City Boutique Hotel is one of the established small hotels in town located just a few metres outside the Venetian Walls and a 10 minute walk from the Archaeological Museum. I like the spacious rooms here and the family-run atmosphere of the small property. A plus is the great breakfast. You will find plenty of very reasonably priced tavernas close to the hotel.

New Town

The new town extends to the eastern and southern part around the old town of Heraklion.

Rocca a Mare Heraklion

Rocca a Mare is a great choice if you wish to stay right by the sea just outside the old town. Getting to Lion Square in the middle of the old town is a 20 minute walk. The new property offers spacious modern rooms with sea view and gives you access to the promenade for evening sea walks.

Ammoundara Beach

Heraklion’s closest beach is located just west from town, very popular, well-organized with sunbeds, and lined with hotels, restaurants, and cafes. The area can feel busy and more touristy but gives you direct access to the sea.

Nuovo Crete By Sea

I stayed here for 5 days last year and had a great stay. The small, quiet hotel, very close to the beach was clean and comfy. The receptionist was very kind and gave me great tips for restaurants and trips.
