When to visit Santorini? The shoulder seasons (from late April to June and September to October) are the best months to visit Santorini. Things are somewhat quieter at the caldera edge, and considerably more quiet on the east coast. From May to October the weather is reliably sunny, and swimming is possible. Sea temperatures are more favorable in fall compared to spring.
Holidaymakers rave about the pretty white picture-book villages of Fira, Oia and Imerovigli. These picturesque villages, with their striking architecture, are located directly on the steep cliffs of the volcanic crater that has been taken over by the sea.

Visit Santorini’s highest town, Pyrgos, and be enchanted by its unique old town and surrounding mountains. Don’t miss the opportunity to sample some of the best Greek wines and many local delicacies!
Just under 200 kilometres from the Greek mainland, the volcanic island of Santorini invites you on an unforgettable journey of discovery. Explore the picturesque white towns such as Oia or Fira, which tower high above the sea.
Go on wonderful hikes through the unspoilt landscapes and enjoy the fantastic views of the surrounding islands. Sample excellent fish dishes in Ammoudi’s historic harbour or relax on the black beach of Kamari. Take in the unique ruins of Akritori. Whatever you decide to do, you certainly won’t get bored on Santorini!

The enchanting town of Oia on the northern tip of Santorini is sure to make visitors’ hearts beat faster. Perched above the imposing cliffs of the Greek island, this snow-white village has a unique charm that is sure to delight! Picturesque alleys, countless charming restaurants, cafés and galleries, as well as the fantastic view of the volcano, make Oia one of the most popular places on Santorini.

Let your soul unwind here and enjoy the view over the beautiful silhouette of the small town. Visit the impressive ruins of the Byzantine fortress during one of the island’s spectacular sunsets or swim in the azure blue sea. Simply let yourself be carried away by the magic of Oia!
Framed by red volcanic rocks and the turquoise blue Aegean Sea lies the old port of Ammoudi, just below Oia. Stroll towards the coast on foot or take a short donkey ride to the harbour basin. Let your nose guide you to one of the many cosy tavernas and enjoy freshly caught fish dishes with a view of the sea. Of course, you can also take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear water here.
However, the harbour of Ammoudi offers a special spectacle at sunset, when the white houses and colourful boats are bathed in magical light and the local restaurants invite you to linger with Greek specialities.

Instead of snow-white sandy beaches, the volcanic island of Santorini offers, among other things, jet-black pebble beaches. Surrounded by rugged landscapes and impressive cliffs, the black beaches on the east side of the island create a very special atmosphere. Spend an unforgettable day swimming in the coastal town of Kamari.
Relax on the impressive black beach and dive into the turquoise blue sea! If you eat at one of the countless restaurants right on the beach, you can use the comfortable sun loungers with a view of the Mediterranean free of charge. Last but not least, you can easily take a boat from here to other dream beaches in the immediate vicinity.

Pyrgos or Pyrgos Kallistis is the highest town on Santorini, a photographer’s dream offering unbeatable views of both sides of the island. But it’s not just the view over the island that makes Pyrgos a highlight, it’s also the traditional Cycladic architecture, the charming stone houses and winding alleys, the blue-domed churches and, last but not least, the Venetian castle above the town!
The town is surrounded by green vineyards and offers a fantastic view of the azure blue sea! If you want to relax and reflect on the many wonderful impressions of Pyrgos, you will also find numerous tavernas in the old town that offer Greek delicacies and, of course, Greek wine!

Fira is the capital of Santorini and attracts visitors with its diverse, cosmopolitan offerings. In addition to countless museums and galleries, some of the island’s most important sights are waiting to be discovered here. For example, visit the impressive Metropolis Cathedral amidst the white houses. And don’t miss the opportunity to take a look inside the colourful nave.

Climb the nearly 600 steps of the Karavolades staircase to take in the view of the city’s beautiful harbour, the caldera, the deep blue Mediterranean Sea and the two neighbouring islands of Palaia Kammeni and Nea Kammeni. Return to the old town by cable car and indulge in culinary delights at one of the numerous tavernas.
Hotel Tip: For the best Fira, Santorini hotel experience, stay on the caldera side for iconic views, or pick Firostefani (a 10-minute walk away) for quieter surroundings.

I stayed at Dream Island Hotel Fira. The family-owned property had exceptional quality of service, optimal for an amazing vacation in Fira.
Visit the Pompeii of Greece and take a journey back in time. Although Akrotiri was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 1600 BC, the Minoan city is considered both the most important archaeological site on the island and one of the most significant sights in Greece.
So take some time to experience the fascinating remains of the ancient settlement up close. Marvel at the detailed frescoes and impressive pottery. Or combine your visit to Akrotiri with a trip to the Prehistoric Museum in Fira to learn more about the settlement and its history.

Just a stone’s throw from Akrotiri, Paralia Kokkini offers an indescribable play of colours created by nature. Against the spectacular backdrop of the red rock face made of volcanic slag, the waves have formed a picturesque little bay with a red sandy beach. The almost 200-metre-long beach of Paralia Kokkini contrasts uniquely with the azure blue sea and is one of the most popular photo motifs on Santorini.
To reach the small beach, you can either walk from Akrotiri to the coast or take one of the local boats directly to the bay. Once there, you can soak up the sun or enjoy the crystal-clear water while swimming and snorkelling.

Just three kilometres from the island’s capital, Fira, Imerovigli invites you to explore and enjoy. The beautiful town is perched 300 metres above the sea on the edge of the caldera and, due to its strategic location, originally served as a fortress and watchtower.
Today, Imerovigli delights visitors with its breathtaking views of the Mediterranean and the unmistakable flair of its picturesque old town. If you want to experience the balcony of Santorini for yourself, the best way to explore Imerovigli is on foot! Follow the winding alleys to take in the white houses and blue domed roofs. Or hike up Skaros Rock to see the enchanting rock church up close!
Ancient Thera is located on the steep Mesa Vouno mountain and is one of the most important archaeological sites on Santorini. Although German archaeologist Friedrich Hiller von Gaertringen did not uncover the fantastic ruins on the mountain slopes until the end of the 19th century, the site continues to captivate visitors interested in history, hikers and active holidaymakers to this day.
The remains of temples, colonnades, theatres, agoras, houses and baths, as well as the spectacular view over the island, make ancient Thera a worthwhile destination. You can also combine your visit to Thera with an unforgettable hike from Kamari, Perissa or Pyrgos to the ruins.

In good weather, with a little luck you can even see as far as Crete from here!
While the small island was named after the youngest daughter of King Theras according to Greek mythology, it is believed that Thirassia was separated from Santorini during a volcanic eruption around 1,600 BC. In any case, it is worth visiting this picturesque island in the middle of the Santorini caldera to enjoy authentic island life away from the hustle and bustle and tourist groups. So take the opportunity to explore the colourful village of Manolas. Soak up the atmosphere of the island’s lively harbour or visit the unspoilt beaches for an unforgettable day of swimming and heavenly tranquillity.
