Crete in April is a great time for active holidaymakers and nature lovers: the island is beautifully green thanks to the winter rains, temperatures rise to around 15-20°C, there are many hours of sunshine, but the sea is still cool (approx. 18°C), ideal for hiking and the first days of early summer, but less so for swimming. The south of Crete is often warmer and quieter – perfect for exploring away from the peak season.

Overall, the weather in April was very pleasant, with the exception of a few windy days with up to 80 km/h gusts. During my trip, the average daytime temperature was around 18ºC.
Though most days were sunny, visibility was somewhat impacted by winds, which transport Sahara dust to Crete. If you’re traveling in the Mediterranean, or even the Balkans, and wondering why it’s hazy, that dust usually the reason.

When Crete’s mild winter slowly gives way to the blossoms of spring in April, the island is transformed into a fantastic sea of flowers. Purple thyme, blue oregano, yellow wood sorrel and red and yellow midday flowers compete to shine the brightest. An ideal time to travel for anyone who wants to avoid the hustle and bustle of the high season and discover the island’s true character.

As winter slowly fades and the first signs of spring appear on the island of Crete, a breathtaking variety of flowers blossoms. From the delicate purple tones of thyme to the bright yellow of wood sorrel, the vibrant colours of Cretan flora are a real feast for the eyes.
April is the perfect time to travel if you are looking for a quiet holiday and want to discover the true character of the island. As the crowds of the high season have not yet arrived, you have the opportunity to explore Crete’s ancient ruins, charming villages and diverse natural beauty in peace and quiet.

But the island of Crete is not just a destination for history and culture enthusiasts. With its mild weather and rising water temperatures, it is also the perfect place for a beach holiday or an active adventure. So why wait? Start planning your dream holiday on the beautiful island of Crete today.

When traveling to Crete in winter or spring, the most important decision is choosing the right base for your holiday. I recommend staying in cities like Chania and Rethymno while exploring the surroundings on day trips. Here you will find open accommodations, restaurants, cafés, and shops.
In contrast, in resort areas, some hotels don’t open up until mid April, or even May. Furthermore, some tavernas and cafés around there will be closed, so you will be somewhat limited in your choice of eateries.
Staying in cities provides convenience. If you stay outside the cities, I recommend booking self-catering villas, or apartments.
Nostos Hotel – B&B in the old town of Chania with a roof terrace offering panoramic views of the bay
Tamar’s Place – Close to Firkas Fortress & Synagogue, excellent value
Serenissima Boutique Hotel – stay in a beautifully restored historic building right in the old town
Alcanea Hotel – historic & cozy with newly renovated spacious rooms
