Crete in autumn is an experience that offers tranquillity and beauty, far away from the hustle and bustle of the peak season. During October and November, when you can see the island in a different light and enjoy its wonders to the fullest. So if you are looking for a place that offers both relaxation and adventure, you should include Crete in your autumn holiday plans.
Crete is known for its pleasant Mediterranean climate, which attracts visitors all year round. But it is in autumn that the island shows its true character. The summer heat gives way to milder weather, the tourist crowds thin out, and nature presents itself in vibrant colours.
In Crete in autumn, average maximum temperatures range between 25 and 27 °C in September and drop to around 20 °C by November. The sea remains warm enough for swimming, you now have the beaches almost to yourself. The mild temperatures and lower visitor numbers make autumn the ideal time for exploring and outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling.
In summary, autumn in Crete is a time when you can experience the island at a quieter, more relaxed pace. The pleasant temperatures, warm sea and colourful nature make Crete a perfect destination for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of summer and enjoy the beauty of the Mediterranean to the fullest.

After the end of the peak season, Crete becomes much quieter in autumn. While the summer months are often characterised by crowds of tourists, autumn offers a unique opportunity to experience the island at a quieter, more relaxed pace. This means you can enjoy the sights without the summer crowds, resulting in a more relaxed and authentic experience.
For culture lovers, Crete also offers great value in autumn: historic sites such as the Palace of Knossos are less crowded, allowing you to explore the ancient ruins in peace. The milder temperatures also mean that you can experience the island’s rich history and culture without the oppressive heat of midsummer.

Moreover, the hotel rooms are cheaper. You can easily find a place in cozy boutique hotels with view on the sea for very affordable prices. In this period it is much calmer too, you don’t have to fight for your room and book everything with month-long advance. But don’t have the impression that the restaurants are not filled with feasting and laughing Greeks! Another thing that graces this wonderful climate.

Autumn is the time when the leaves turn colourful and the landscape of Crete is transformed into a picturesque panorama. It is also the perfect season for longer hikes through the Samaria Gorge or for trips to the mountain villages to experience the natural beauty of the island.
These conditions also invite you to enjoy the diverse beaches of the island, many of which are still inviting for swimming in late autumn. The pink sand of Elafonisi and the turquoise blue waters of the Balos Lagoon are just two examples of the unique coastal landscapes Crete has to offer.

Overlooking Kissamos Bay and just a few metres from the water, the cozy Youphoria Beach Front Villas are located directly on the beach and offers fantastic views of the Aegean Sea. The new Beach Front Villa is also in a privileged location, just a few metres from the water of the clear Kissamos Bay, not far from Balos.

Near Elafonisi is the highly rated luxurious holiday home Cretan Soul, which combines efficient, sustainable design with locally sourced materials and respect for the history and lifestyle of the place. With its unique location right by the sea, you will love spending your time in the shade of the large pergola and enjoying the stunning view.
Crete is not only a place of relaxation, but also a paradise for active holidaymakers. Whether hiking, mountaineering or cycling, the island offers a wide range of opportunities to be active while enjoying the beauty of nature. And after a day full of activities or relaxation on the beach, the tavernas invite you to sample the local cuisine and end the day in a cosy atmosphere.
The landscape in Crete in autumn is characterised by golden and red tones, and the harvest season brings an abundance of fresh local produce that can be enjoyed in the markets and taverns. This makes autumn in Crete an excellent time to enjoy Cretan cuisine.

Local products such as olives and grapes are available on every street corner, and many restaurants offer seasonal specialities that are not to be missed. For wine lovers, autumn is a wonderful time to discover Cretan wines.
The island has a long wine tradition, and the different microclimates and ancient grape varieties such as Assyrtiko, Vidiano and Kotsifali provide an impressive variety of flavours. Whether wine tasting in the lush vineyards of central Crete or enjoying a glass of wine in a tavern by the sea, Cretan wines are a must for every visitor.

While the hot summer months of July and August are perfect for beach and swimming holidays, autumn attracts visitors with milder temperatures and significantly less hustle and bustle. Find out why a stay in Crete is particularly worthwhile in October.
The average maximum temperature in Crete in October is 22 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperatures, at around 15 degrees, are already significantly lower than in the summer months. However, the sea remains pleasantly warm at an average of 20 degrees and is still ideal for swimming. The average rainfall in October is 40 millimetres. The sun still shines for an average of 6.4 hours per day.

By comparison, the maximum temperatures in July and August are significantly higher, at 28.5 and 28.4 degrees respectively. Even in September, the average temperature is still noticeably above the October level at 26.4 degrees.

As stated on the Corissia Hotels website, October in Crete is the ‘perfect time to escape the crowds and enjoy a peaceful holiday’. The main tourist season is over in October, which means you almost have the beaches to yourself.
Another advantage of this time of the year is the second flowering season during those autumn weeks. Crete’s nature begins to recover from the hot and dry summer months during this time. The island is then an ideal destination for nature lovers.

Thanks to the cooler temperatures, ‘hikes through the island’s breathtaking mountain ranges and deep gorges’ are recommended. I can say that even though the beach season is slowly but surely coming to an end, the water temperatures in October are still warm enough for swimming. A holiday in Crete that includes swimming is still perfectly possible in October and even into November.
Popular tourist attractions such as ancient sites or the Greek towns themselves can also be visited in a much more relaxed manner in October. As the majority of tourists have already left by October, there is usually no large influx of visitors.

Despite slightly more frequent rain showers, the sun still shines in Crete in November. A breathtaking autumn landscape with pleasant temperatures awaits you on your holiday in Crete in November. Towards the end of the month, you will need to turn on the heating in Crete for some days, especially in the evenings. November in Crete is considered a very good month for active holidaymakers due to the pleasant conditions.
